Introduction

While working as a Consultant of Anesthesia at the Medical Research Institute of the University of Alexandria, Egypt,  Dr. El Mulla has discovered a simple technique for locating the epidural space - a small gap that is separated from the spinal column by a tough membrane (the "Dura Mater") and forms a space full of nerve endings.  Most of these control a number of important motor functions such as muscle movements. They also carry pain sensations and consequently highly effective pain relief is possible by injecting an appropriate anesthetic solution into this Epidural Space.

However, a frequently encountered problem is the accurate location of this space as the Epidural Needle is advanced through the back towards the direction of the spinal column.

For anesthetists highly experienced in this procedure, it is the 'loss of resistance' that serves as an indication that the needle has penetrated to the the epidural space. Even they can occasionally misjudge its location, e.g.: in some young adults the change in resistance is not as distinct as normally encountered as the needle enters the epidural space. The consequences of injecting the solution into the wrong place can range from failure to even even death.

El Mulla's device has changed all that!   His invention is a small unobtrusive attachment, which makes it virtually impossible to misjudge the location of the epidural space - a claim that was extensively and scientifically proven using hospital patients and control groups.
