Ladies Can Go Alaska Halibut Fishing Too
By Steven Letsinger
I didn't know what to say when my husband said to me, "Hey, do you want to go in Alaska? I have always wanted to go Halibut with you." I couldn't believe that he wanted to go Alaska Halibut with me. That just didn't seem right because I'm not exactly an outdoorsy type of girl. I would rather stay inside with my computer and play an electronic game. But I decided to go.
My husband started telling me all of these random facts about Halibut. He explained to me that it is in the flatfish family. When he said that, I was imaging this paper thin fish, wondering how its organs would fit in there. But I knew I was just being ridiculous in my thoughts, especially when he told me that the largest Halibut have been weighed in at 500 pounds. I looked at my husband's pole and wondered how in the world he could go Halibut in Alaska with that thing. It didn't look like it could handle 500 pounds. However, he did tell me that the average weight is 25 pounds. That is certainly a far cry from 500.
However, my husband decided that we go to Homer, Alaska, which is considered the Halibut capital of the world. This is because 50 to 80 pound Halibut are common for this particular region. I asked my husband, "Will your pole handle that kind of weight" and he told me that it would. I certainly couldn't see how, but I took his word for it.
Trying to convince me even further, he was telling me that our catch for the day would be quite the tasty one, which I told him I was not going to take the responsibility of prepping the fish. That is something he said that he would do. I figured he
would make me watch, though. But it was great because we met up with a charter and the price wasn't really that bad. My husband had done research prior to our trip to make sure he found the best charter with the best boat because he didn't want to mar the experience for me. He figured that, if I enjoyed the experience, I would let him get our own boat. That's something I had been objecting to for quite sometime.
But I was quite impressed with the entire experience. It was relaxing and my husband and I talked about a lot of things, including our desire to have children. I had no idea what his views were on the subject until we went in Alaska. I learned a lot about my husband that day. I also learned a lot when we actually reeled in a 60 pound Halibut. It was so large that we had to take it to a butcher to have it packaged for us to take home. That had me sighing a sigh of relief, but I must say that it was the tastiest fish I had ever had.
And now, it looks like next year my husband and I will go Alaska Halibut fishing with one more on board.
