One of the more sought after fish swimming in Alaskan waters is the mighty halibut. In this article, I'm going to discuss a bit about the Halibut and then about for these mighty fish. There are few fish on the planet that are more delectable than the Halibut. If you've ever enjoyed a Halibut steak for dinner, you know why. If you haven't, put Halibut on your list as something you must try.

The halibut is in the flatfish family, just like its smaller cousin the flounder. In fact the flounder and Halibut look very similar except for the fact that the Halibut is much larger. The Halibut is the largest of the flat fish with an average weight of around 25 pounds and to grow to sizes in excess of 500 pounds. Halibut will feed on nearly anything that they can fit in their mouths so enticing them to bite isn't terribly difficult. The real challenge comes with the battle to get them in the boat. Many Halibut are so large that they must be shot before bringing them onto the boat.

The size of these fish alone warrants the help of a professional. Find a good guide and your well on your way to having a great time fishing, but will also end up with a freezer full of delicious Halibut to enjoy.
