Fishing For Halibut In Alaska
By Kevin Sewell
Alaska is arguably the best destination in the entire world. With so many places to go, beautiful scenery and thousands upon thousands of salmon and halibut, you can understand why anglers enjoy in Alaska. While most anglers think of salmon when they think of Alaska fishing, there are fish called halibut that provide some spectacular opportunities.
Pacific Halibut can grow extremely big with most fish averaging around 30 pounds and some fish exceeding 600 pounds. Most of these fish are caught near the bottom, but they will come up in the water column to feed and we have even seen some videos on youtube that showed people feeding the halibut near the surface from a charter boat.
Some of the cities in Alaska have excellent salt water for halibut and salmon as well as good salmon and trout on area rivers and streams. If you plan a trip to target Halibut, you will need to be in a town that has a port so the boats have access to the salt water . The following are some of the popular towns: Sitka, Juneau, Haines, Skagway, Cordova, Whittier, Valdez, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Wrangell and Homer, Alaska.
The inside passage is the section of land farthest south and also closest to the United States. This area consists of several towns that offer some excellent halibut fishing.
The southern region of the inside passage consists of Ketchikan, Petersburg and Wrangell. The northern region of the inside passage consists of Sitka, Juneau, Haines and Skagway. Sitka is one of the most popular towns to visit for planning a Halibut trip and you can also catch plenty of salmon as well if you hire a charter.
The Prince William Sound is another popular area for Halibut fishing. This region is located in south central Alaska and it consists of Cordova, Valdez and Whittier. Each of these towns has charters available and you should be able to catch Halibut and Salmon on the same charter.
If you would like to get some more information on any or all of these areas we listed, take a look at our Alaska fishing page for visitor guides, charters and lodging.
