With the surge in popularity in in Southern California, especially amongst newer anglers, it's a good idea to be aware of the optimal times and seasons for the different breeds.

Not only will this help you to land a bigger catch, but it will also help you determine which months you should be in, depending on your taste. Weather conditions play a big part in how successful you are, so it's a good idea to brush up on how to predict how a day is going to pan out.

Since some types of fish that are happy to swim in a variety of weather conditions, predicting the weather becomes even more important. If you want to fish during the times when fish feed and rest, then you will want a calm and stable water surface.

Obviously, weather conditions in Southern California need to be clear and free from any kind of turbulent atmosphere. Since fish tend to feed in the afternoon, and then swim to the deeper areas to rest, a clear, mid-afternoon day is ideal for in Southern California.

Fish will be attracted to the vibrations on the surface, and swim upwards to feast, making this an especially enjoyable and productive time for fishing. Make sure the weather conditions aren't too wet, though - heavy rain will usually stop the fish from surfacing at all.
