How To Get A Florida Fishing License
By Irsan Gao

If you want to fish in the shores of Florida, be reminded that you can't just barge in with your boat and cast. There are certain rules and regulations to follow. This means that you have to apply for a Florida license before you can enjoy the waters and the fish of the State.

There are two types of Florida license available. The first one is the license for recreational fishing. If you are a hobby fisher, this is the one that you should apply for. On the other hand, if your intention is to fish in large amounts and then sell it somewhere, you need a commercial license.

Recreational fishers can easily acquire the license they need. It really isn't much of a hassle. The State simply wants to regulate all the activities in the area that's why they are requiring such a permit to be secured. They also use the funds obtained through the license in conserving Florida's rich marine life.

A Florida license is required for both residents and non-residents of Florida. It can be obtained from the offices of the county tax collector. If you don't know where that is, you can go to the subagents to get one. The subagents being referred here are the sporting good stores and equipment retail shops operating all across the State. It is also possible to buy the license over the internet. If you're planning to fish in Florida waters real soon, it is best that you look into the places where you can obtain the license beforehand.

You should also determine if you want to do saltwater or freshwater while in Florida. If you want to do both, you are going to need two permits. Just in case you can't decide yet, you are better off getting both of these licenses for your convenience. However, if you're going to Key West more particularly, you only need the saltwater Florida license as there's no freshwater in that area.

To be granted a Florida license, you have to be 16 years old and older. The license is required for anybody who wishes to fish using a boat. This is most applicable if you're bringing your own boat with you. If in case you are going to rent a charter, there's no need to apply for a separate Florida license. The charter should have the necessary permits for all their passengers.

If you want to fish from the land, a pier, or a bridge, there's no need for a license either - especially if you are a Florida resident. Even so, you are still encouraged to apply

for a permit because you are actually helping in the preservation of the Florida grounds if you do. The permits are highly affordable anyway.

There are a few exceptions to these rules though. Members of the US Armed Forces, senior citizens, and disabled residents need not apply for a Florida license. However, they should have the proper documents and proofs of their residency to be qualified under the exemption rule. Florida residents are those who have valid Florida address and have stayed there for more than six months.

A Florida license valid for 3 days only costs $7. A week-long permit is at $17. The prices are much steeper if you're planning to setup a charter business. The license fee for this endeavor depends upon the capacity of your vessel. If your boat can carry 11 customers or more at a time, you will be charged a license cost of $801.50. The minimum license fee for a small boat with a charter captain that can carry less than five passengers is $201.50. The fees already include the tax collector surcharge.

If you're visiting Florida just to fish, it is best that you purchase the license before arrival. This will save you both time and hassle. As such, you can focus your attention more on the fish. You can simply call the Florida Conservation office to have your license shipped to you. It's fairly easy and hassle free.

But if you don't want to think about Florida license and how to obtain one, it is best that you call your favorite charter operating anywhere in Florida. Book with them and you shouldn't have to worry about baits, lures, boats, crew, and a license - just your skills and physical abilities, perhaps.
