Making Cheap Homemade Carp And Catfish Bait!
By Tim F. Richardson
It is very easy to make a successful homemade bait for big carp and catfish and using a proven recipe to get you started is all you need to get the bait-making bug that can save you a fortune and catch loads of fish! This unique and successful free bait recipe will catch you fish even when fished against more expensive ready made baits! Read on to find out more and save loads of money by doing it yourself into the bargain...
The great thing about any simple base mix is that you can adapt and improve its stimulatory and attractive properties in endless ways once you get some practice and confidence from making it and catching on it! This basic bait recipe makes a pound (16 ounces) of bait. Although basic it is a very well proven bait offering some of the most important aspects of a nutritionally stimulating bait.
What you do is get a range of dry ingredients; perhaps some cereal ingredients and some other vegetable, meat or marine protein based ingredients and mix them all together. You can use a liquid (even water) to bind your bait together but eggs bind better and offer lots of attractive and essential nutrition to your fish. You can combine many substances with your eggs to enhance the impact of your bait on fish senses, from flavours, colours, taste enhancers, liquid amino acids, oils and sweeteners etc, to special hormone triggers and natural enzymes etc.
Your liquid and water soluble dry powder bait elements are vitally important because these will be dispersing from the bait as your bait soaks up water once cast out. These especially will draw fish towards your baits along their concentration gradients. These concentration gradients form an attractive trail for fish to easily detect.
Your fish will track down the location of your baits in this case using olfactory (smell) and gustatory (taste) chemical detecting senses. What your entire bait really can become by design is a key to fit their natural senses in as many potent and diverse ways as you wish; so giving your fish more and more irresistible reasons to eat your bait! Doing this takes some extra know-how as you will see, but getting hold of and exploiting this special bait knowledge can make your catches incredible (even if you are a mere average angler!)
This basic recipe makes over a pound (16 ounces) of bait:
4 ounces of semolina.
4 ounces of soya flour.
5 ounces of white or brown fish meal or halibut pellet powder for instance.
2 ounces of squid powder.
1 ounce of crunchy kelp meal, or top grade green lipped mussel extract (or half an ounce of sea salt for example,) to boost taste, smell and stimulation
properties.)
4 large eggs.
20 millilitres of marine halibut oil, or pure salmon oil or hemp oil for instance.
80 millilitres of Ccmoore Feedstim XP or Rod Hutchinson Shellfish Sense Appeal, or Carpfishingpellets; (see on Google,) predigested salmon protein liquid; with the additional unique pure salmon oil and premium grade liquid lecithin available (ask Phil!)
So you get your dry powder ingredients and your liquid ingredients (usually including an egg, or egg albumen or whey gel element to help binding) and mix them together. Your liquid ingredients should be well whisked together by hand or a kitchen mixer for example. Mix your ingredients by adding your dry ingredients gradually to your liquid ingredients in a large bowl or pan and a strong suitable kitchen utensil and I use a thick bladed stirring implement or my kitchen mixer!
Once you have made a workable dough that is not too sticky and not too dry you have your bait ready for use. You can use your bait straight away as paste, or roll it into paste shapes or balls to air-dry for 24 hours to use on a hair-rig, (or as free baits in PVA bags or lead moulds etc.) You can boil your rolled paste pieces in a prepared large pan of water (introducing a few baits at a time and removing them as they have been boiled for 2 minutes.)
Dry off your boiled baits on paper or clean towels or suitable wooden or metal drying boxes or trays for at least 3 hours before use or storage. Before use it is a good idea to boost your baits with some of your added liquid feeding stimulants and attractors (so keep some spare mixed up as a bait dip or bait soak.) Making this bait is about as simple and easy as it can be they really work so give them a try; catch some big fish on them and you will really get the seriously exciting bait-making bug!
